Summary: Engaging, straightforward and easy to work with, that’s how clients describe Ira Smolin, who has been providing decorative and straight painting and wallpapering for New York City residents for over 25 years. The firm’s decorative specialties include marbling, gold leaf and trompe l’oeil. Sources say the work is beautiful.

From The Guide to New York for New Yorkers by Charles A. Suisman and Carol Molesworth:

Mr. Smolin has been a residential painting contractor for 15 years. “You have to be conscious of more than good quality. You have to keep the place clean and be very conscious that people are living there.” Mr. Smolin does not look down on small jobs, like painting a single room or papering a bathroom. His partner does glazing, marbling, gold leafing, and trompe l’oeil.

From Where to Find it, Buy it, Eat it in New York by Gerry Frank:

The really good people in the business will take special care in your home and should bring all of their own supplies. Here are some outfits that have been especially recommended to me: Ira Smolin Painting Company.

From NYToday.com 11/5/1999:

Ira Smolin of Smolin Painting Co. (831-0205) says that when a painter comes in to look around your room, he is not thinking about colors and finishes right away. “I see the cracks, peeling paint, separating molding,” he says. The painter tries to determine what is the cause of the cracks and how to fix them. Smolin carries a moisture meter to be sure that areas where leaks have been are now dry and will take paint. The preparation of the wall can take several days if an apartment has a lot of cracks. Smolin charges $450 a day per man for painting. He does flat painting and some decorative finishes.
